The World Backgammon Championship it is organized every summer in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The event started out a long time ago, in 1979. The origin of this great backgammon tournament is credited to the Prince Alexis Obolensky. He launched in the Bahamas in 1964 the first international backgammon tournament. However beside this great tournament the Russian Prince also established the Las Vegas World Championship. This backgammon tournament was held between 1967 and 1974 in Las Vegas, Nevada. After all of this events Obolensky began to make plans for the European Backgammon Championship in Monte Carlo. The person that came up with the idea of naming this event World Backgammon Championship was the backgammon player and promoter Lewis Deyong.

The first world championship was held in the Bahamas, but later on it started to be organized in Monte Carlo. Nowadays this backgammon tournament has reached such an high level that the players in order to participate in this competition need to pay 200 euro to be able to enter at the beginner level or 1000 Euro for the main event.
